Our Wastewater Systems

Kern Utility Co. currently owns and operates a select number of wastewater treatment facilities. Our mission is to expand our portfolio through strategic acquisitions and service partnerships—whether by acquiring additional systems or contracting to maintain and operate them on behalf of others. We are committed to ensuring the safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible discharge of effluent into Missouri’s streams and waterways.

Listed below are our current systems that we operate or own.

Southgate Ln, Plato MO.

This facility provides wastewater treatment for five duplexes using a sand filter system, an established and reliable solution commonly found in rural areas of Missouri without access to municipal sewer infrastructure. Wastewater first enters septic tanks, after which the influent is recirculated through a sand filter for primary treatment. It is then further refined in a recirculation tank before passing through chlorination and dechlorination chambers. The final effluent discharged from the facility complies fully with Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) standards and is considered safe for release into the state's waterways.

Taylor Lane Estates, Plato MO.

This facility treats wastewater for multiple residences and duplexes using a sand filter system—a proven and dependable method commonly utilized in rural Missouri communities lacking municipal sewer access. The treatment process begins with septic tanks, where solids are separated. The resulting influent is then recirculated through a sand filter for primary filtration, followed by further treatment in a recirculation tank. Final disinfection is achieved through ultraviolet (UV) technology, which neutralizes harmful microorganisms by altering their DNA. The treated effluent meets all regulatory standards set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) and is safely discharged into the environment, ensuring the protection of Missouri’s waterways.
